His mother lives in a manufactured home in the city. She says that families used to be closer. She sits outside in one chair; he sits in the other. As a child he learned to ignore the smell. The parents were going in the newer bunk house. Far room on the right. Sister would be in the spare room. Bunk bed and extra furniture. Winter sheds picked up here and there. Bring your own sheets and towels and breakfast cereal. The room is scrubbed clean. Except for one little dead wasp tucked headfirst under the baseboard. She stares at it. I'ma own this orange!

This morning I watched my two-year-old son snag an unpeeled orange off of the breakfast table. Anyone who knows kids could tell how this would end, especially me since I’ve seen him do the same thing with a banana. But I let him at it because, within reason, it’s important for kids to make these kinds of discoveries on their own. After studying it curiously for a moment, he decided to taste it, and this wasn’t some inquisitive little nip that gets a Hallmark card chuckle from the in-laws around the Thanksgiving day table, this was an all or nothin’, in your face, “I’ma OWN this orange!” chomp. So Far...

My son just turned 5 months old yesterday. I joined DeviantArt before he was born in the hopes that I could upload some drawings, get some comments and improve my art. Sheeyeah. We see how well that worked out. Hubby and baby and I are traveling quite a bit this summer, but hopefully when we get home I'll be able to upload some art. Maybe one thing? One piece; one drawing will be my goal!
